Equity mutual fund schemes saw net inflows rise 31 per cent month-on-month to Rs 38,306 crore in September, with small-cap and mid-cap funds attracting the bulk of investor interest despite weakness in the equity market.
The inflows were higher than the Rs 29,329 crore recorded in August, according to data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) on Monday.
Small-cap funds led the inflows among equity categories, attracting Rs 9,039 crore during the month. Mid-cap funds followed with net inflows of Rs 7,835 crore, while large-cap funds received Rs 860 crore.
Commenting on the data, Suranjana Borthakur, Head of Distribution and Strategic Alliances at Mirae Asset Mutual Fund, said the rise in inflows reflected continued investor interest across market-cap categories rather than a concentration in a particular segment.
Small-cap funds recorded their highest-ever inflows, while mid-cap funds saw their strongest inflows in several months. Flexi-cap funds also attracted nearly Rs 7,000 crore, indicating sustained interest across different parts of the market.
Borthakur noted that equity inflows crossing Rs 30,000 crore for only the second time in the current financial year pointed to continued investor participation despite market weakness.
There were also shifts in other investment categories during September. Hybrid funds saw outflows as investors moved towards pure equity schemes, while Specialised Investment Funds (SIFs) continued to attract money, with inflows of around Rs 7,000 crore.
Gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) also saw inflows rise to about Rs 4,500 crore, among the highest levels in recent months. According to Borthakur, this suggests that investors are continuing to allocate money to gold amid global uncertainty.
Overall, the September figures point to sustained investor interest in equities, particularly mid-cap and small-cap funds, even as market performance remains subdued.
